This is an advanced training for those professionals who have attended a five-day MBCT training, have facilitated at least one MBCT group and who wish to have the opportunity to study the process of inquiry intensely.  Inquiry is both a skill and a practice as it incorporates the MBCT teacher’s capability to reveal the underlying principles of mindfulness and to embody a presence that invites the MBCT participant to embark on a journey of discovery about the relevance of mindfulness practice as an approach for the prevention of depression relapse.  Seen through this lens, inquiry is the keystone to the MBCT program. This training is highly interactive and highlights the necessity of personal practice as a platform from which to teach.

The Training Workshop

The heart of this training lies in its intention to explore the facilitation and delivery of inquiry.  Inquiry includes an ability to demonstrate the spirit of mindfulness alongside competence in delivering the MBCT program components.  Therefore this training program focuses on developing skills that strengthen an embodied mindful presence and examines the theme, rationale, intention and practice skills for each of the eight MBCT sessions.  Over the course of the program we will pay attention to nurturing specific qualities associated with mindfulness, such as a present moment directed focus, an awareness that represents an inner and outer listening and a compassionate stance that incorporates a willingness to meet our teaching edges as they arise with generosity and kindness. These characteristics are already natural qualities that we all possess.  This training offers the time to nurture these qualities through silent mindfulness practice, through simulated patient-teacher encounters, discussion and personal supervision from the retreat leaders.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be better able to:

  • skillfully articulate the process of inquiry, using an experiential foundation to define the practice
  • define the components and characteristics of inquiry
  • demonstrate the centrality of teaching with such interpersonal skills as warmth, acceptance, compassion, loving kindness, equanimity and joy
  • name mindfulness skills that create a compassionate platform for clients to experience themselves and their symptoms
  • demonstrate proficiency in embodying present moment directed skills
  • describe how the lens of mindfulness offers a radical perceptual shift for approaching difficult modes of mind and mood states
  • describe the theme, rationale, intention and practice skills embedded in the MBCT program
  • engage confidently in group process from a mindfulness perspective
  • articulate appropriate professional and personal ethics
